Trees act as noise barriers and as shade producers during months of the intense summer sun. Shade on a house reduces inside temperatures considerably during the summer and reduces the maintenance of painted surfaces. Deciduous trees are especially effective; by dropping their leaves in winter, they allow desirable winter sunshine to penetrate a house when it is needed, and in summer they block the sun when it becomes destructive. For maximum utility, trees should be on the south side of the house.
